We currently have approximately 25 alpacas on our farm. There are two types of Alpaca at Mayfield, Huacaya and Suri. Huacaya's have a shorter dense coat and come in 22 natural colours from White through fawns and browns to jet black. Suri's have a longer coat which when fully grown hangs down in a deadlock style. Can you pick out the difference?
Zorro is our Rose Grey Stud male and has one of the finest fleeces in the UK. The quality of Alpaca fiber is measured in microns and is finer than cashmere.
Alpacas are naturally timid creatures but very inquisitive. All our Alpacas are very friendly and have become comfortable with eating from a human hand. Bags of Alpaca food are available to buy in the Coffee Shop.
Meet Princess the Llama at Mayfield Alpacas, Ringinglow.
Llamas, like Alpacas are all part of the Camelid family. Llamas are larger and heavier than Alpacas with banana shaped ears and longer thinner faces.
Say hi to Princess when you come to visit the alpacas and see if you can spot the differences.
Brothers Malcolm and Alan are Kunekune a small breed of pig originating from New Zealand. Kuunekune's are hairy with a rotund build. Unbelievably they were rescued from a tiny flat in Sheffield.
They love human attention so feel free to give them a scratch on their backs!
Our Shetlands, Tom and Dick are brothers who were rescued by a local animal sanctuary. They joined Mayfield Alpacas in 2010 and are sweet natured and friendly. They are now over 30 years old and still, very much enjoying life on the farm.
Our bunnies and little pigs are a recent addition to our small animal collection. Spending winter in the comfort of our indoor enclosures, they spend the summer months enjoying their large outdoor areas.
Jason is our Cockerel has recently been introduced to two new lady friends, Henrietta (fawn) and Queenie (black). All our Hens and Cockerels live in a purpose built outdoor enclosure and are ready and waiting to say hello. Jason is our alarm clock and will greet you loudly if you arrive early enough.
All our Ducks are long term residents of Mayfield Alpacas. They were all incubated from eggs and reared from ducklings by Elaine. They can be found in "walk through wood" together with some wild Mallard ducks who have decided that Mayfield Alpacas is a nice place to call home.
